A very guilty pleasure,
This review is from: Darren Lynn Bousman - Repo! The Genetic Opera [DVD] (DVD)
I love Repo, I own it and have probably watched it at least 5 times in the last year. Somehow, I can't give it more than a 3 star rating despite this - I can't help feeling that it is a guilty pleasure, and recommend it to people rather nervously.
It is, as other people have said, a love it or hate it situation with Repo, and when you love it it is despite its faults. Paris Hilton's cameo is rediculous, Pavi and Largo border on annoying and the 17 song Shiloh sings is just terrible. The premise tests patience, and I'm not sure the comic panel introduction works.
However, there are some wonderful aspects of Repo! that outweigh the faults, and in my eyes redeem the film. The art direction is wonderful and some characters are beautifully fantastical - Blind Mag is a great example and the song she sings with Shiloh is a high point. Anthony Head's performance is the best of his career and he is perfectly cast as the Repo Man, with scenes that Saw fans will particularly enjoy. The horror aspect of the musical is seamlessly woven into the story, creating great black comedy. The songs are hit and miss, but the hits stay with you long after the credits roll.
A fun, gory film that is not without its faults. Many will be put off, but if you can overlook them it is hugely enjoyable and inspiring.
