2.0 out of 5 stars Thought it was a good Wi-Fi Printer - but ............., 16 Dec. 2013

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Canon PIXMA MG7150 All in one printer - Black (Print, Scan, Copy, Wifi, Air Print and Pixma Cloud Link) (Accessory)
I've just replaced my Canon Pixma MG 6150 with this. The 7150 is more compact - tidier. Setting it up was OK. It is essential though to follow the steps closely - it would be helpful if the setup diagrams were text assisted because you sometimes need to check carefully that you have interpreted the diagrams carefully. I had to take two go's at the Wi-Fi setup but the second attempt was successful. The quality of the text and pictures on plain paper is very good - the same result as the 6150 which also printed well on plain paper. Auto duplexing is useful. I haven't yet tried photos on photo paper nor scanning. Print cartridges are expensive. However, I will use the Canon cartridges because I believe that it was the cheap cartridges which killed my 6150 and caused me to replace it with this machine.

Additional Note.

July 2015. 18 months after purchase the MG 7150 has just died on me! The only option I'm given is to parcel it up and send it 200 miles to the nearest Canon repair centre. There are only 2 repair centres available to me - both are in the London area. Is that going to be a cheap option?? I don't think so - so a new printer - after only 18 months!

Hi Phil

May I ask you a couple of questions please?

1. How do you know that using other ink's caused your previous Canon MG 6150 printer to disrepair or killed as you wonderfully put it! :) I ask because I owned a MP 560. Did you ever get a B200 error on your previous printer?

2. Have you had a chance to try photo printing on photo paper yet? If so, was it any good?

Thank you in advance for your time.

RF

Mornin'

I'm afraid I can't be much help for you at this stage. I had been using cheaper inks (a type recommended by Which?) for quite a while without any problem, then I started printing multiple copies of family history reports. I think that was too much for the machine and I 'guessed' that when ink started to leak into the internals that it was due to the cheap inks. I tried everything I could think of to clean the machine without success. Canon advised taking it to one of their workshops but the nearest was hundreds of miles away and I decided that it would be better to change the machine.

I've been pleased with the 7150 so far but I do use Canon inks now with a 90gsm paper which I buy from Tesco.

I can't remember whether I had a B200 error code now.

I still haven't printed photos onto photo paper - I have no need, but when I print photos onto the 90gsm paper I set the print quality to high and select the Other papers option, under Media Type, then choose High Resolution paper and I'm very satisfied with the result.
