An essential record of a memorable event,
This review is from: Les Miserables - The 25th Anniversary in Concert at the O2 [DVD] (DVD)
There are not many shows that exceed expectations and the sell out crowd on the Sunday night of 3rd October 2010 witnessed something truly moving and unique. A stellar cast of principals delivered some of the greatest songs ever written for musicals with passion and skill. To listen to Lea Salonga's note perfect and angst ridden reading of 'I dreamed a dream' completely erases any other unfortunate associations the song has gained with a certain talent show. Other highlights are well documented but for the record are; Norm Lewis singing 'Stars', Samantha Barks with another angst ridden song 'On my own', Nick Jonas having a good crack at what is one of Michael Ball's most memorable songs 'Empty chairs at empty tables', Alfie Boe stealing the show with a passionate rendition of 'Bring him home' with endless applause and cheering afterwards and finally the hilarious 'Master of the house' expertly delivered by Jenny Galloway and Matt Lucas (yes, Matt Lucas!). The dialogue is all sung rather than spoken with lots of snatches of the famous songs and other highlights, expertly sung by the company are 'Drink with me', an aching melancholy song, 'One day more' a rousing finale to act 1 and 'Do you hear the people' sing, the shows anthem.
Unlike the 10th anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall, the cast come and go rather than sit on stage throughout and get up just for their parts. So it is more like seeing the show in this sense.
The orchestra are flawless with some expert harp playing and a lovely understated oboe solo after the battle sections and conductor David Charles Abell is more than able. A large choir supplement the choral pieces and are seated in three groups wearing the red, white and blue of the french flag. The DVD can never completely capture the atmosphere of the show, but if you were there you have to have it and if you were not then buy it to see what a treat you missed.
