Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Hard Duty: Merkiaari Wars Book 1 (Kindle Edition)
Firstly, let me say that after reading book one, I went straight back to the kindle store and bought books two and three.
I'm an avid reader of Iain (m) Banks (RIP), Alastair Reynolds and the like, and I devour enthralling space opera at a rate that the current cumulative authors' works can't seem to keep up with.
The Merkiaari series of books don't add much that hasn't been seen in other sci-fi books, and indeed has some clichéd aspects to it, which may put some people off. However, by far the worst bit of these books is the grammar. Typically homonyms; past and passed seem to be used interchangeably, There are other examples, but essentially, in numerous places, it comes across as though speech recognition has been used, and spellings checked, but the wrong word has been chosen (e.g. scene and seen).
Now that that is out of the way, and the reason for the 5 stars, the story itself is fantastically engaging, it's very easy to feel an attachment with various characters, to the point where you'll sit-up in bed far past a decent hour, just to make sure your favourite Shan is still alive into the next chapter.
There's so much scope here, I really hope this series continues for many more books... With a proof reader :)
