Ready with the soldering iron...,
This review is from: Robot Building for Beginners (Technology in Action Series) (Paperback)
I bought this book to help me with a robot-mad 7 year old whose current ambition in life is to invent robots to explore the planets. The other reviews I read said that it was aimed at total beginners, but to be honest whilst *I* find the book brilliant I think it is not quite right for a 7 year old. It's really aimed at people who have already built and played with Lego Mindstorm kits (which are now on the Christmas shopping list...) and preferably some more advanced kits, and so have a bit of experience wielding screwdrivers, pliers, cutters etc.
If you're ready for soldering, get this book. If you're not ready for soldering (or not ready to let your kids loose with a soldering iron), try Lego Mindstorms or a build-it-yourself kit.

F. B. Wilson says:
I wouldn't equate a robotics for beginners book as being aimed at 7-year-olds. Robotics involves many scientific disciplines that aren't taught until high school and to limit a book's rating because it doesn't teach someone who can't yet grasp the fundamental concepts required to enter into the field is poor form.
