Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
It is now many years since I first bought this annual pocket book, and it remains my go-to reference source when presented with a need for basic information.
The wine world is full of massive coffee table tomes and popularist blokey bookshelf guides. Hugh Johnson's guide remains accessible, portable, relevant and reliable.
It is virtually impossible to cover every wine and vineyard in one book, but if you pick a region or a grape that you know really well, this book will reassure you that the author and his team have done their research properly. That then gives you the confidence to trust their recommendations and comments elsewhere.
It is also quite inexpensive, and not money wasted, although I probably buy a new edition only every 2/3 years now.
