...but with nowhere to go, right at the end.
It would be totally unfair to say I was disappointed by this story, because I was not, well not entirely anyway. In parts the narrative was frightening, while in others it's desperately sad. By the time the story was almost laid out, I was full of hope for the main character and looking forward to an earth shattering climax - which, put simply, never happened. I was left totally flat by the ending, which IMHO just seemed so lame I couldn't believe it.
What went wrong Mr Koontz? Did you loose your way, let go of the thread?
Throughout my life I have lost count of the books that I have read - there must literally be many hundreds, almost always either sci-fi or horror, with a few thrillers thrown in for good measure. Throughout my long reading career, I have rarely felt so let down by any book, right when the end was in sight and nothing could possibly go wrong.
To be truthful 'Innocence' is worth the read for the first nine tenths of the story, which is up there with the best that I have read. Possibly with the exception of the Odd Thomas, who is without doubt the strongest character of any story I have ever read.
If you believe in fairy tail endings then you will not be as disappointed as I was. If you expect justification, explanation and enlightenment then you will be left dangling - asking "What Happened?"
