My great-grandfather's first job was as a page at Dunsfold Manor, Ripley, Surrey.
Subsequently he became a labourer and stockman.
When his health began to fail him in his 70s he became a labourer mending roads.
His cottage possessed four rooms. which housed 12 children and a lodger!
He lived all his life in Ripley until his v. old age when he went to live with my grandmother.
As their was no welfare state you were dependant on the kindness of your children.
