This review is from: Jawbone JamBox Wireless Bluetooth Speaker - Black Diamond (Wireless Phone Accessory)The important phrase to bear in mind when considering this unit is "..for it's size".
Whatever you say or read about it, you MUST attach this phrase on the end of it or you will be sorely disappointed.
To get good depth of bass, you must have decent sized drivers and an enclosure that's tunes and capable of handling the bass frequencies. Its just a physics axiom but generally, the larger the drivers, the deeper the sounds go, so when you consider that the drivers on this thing are around 1" diameter, you should know that:
a) you're not going to get a huge amount of bass and
b) whatever bass you get will not travel far because the power's just not there to push it.
Bearing these things in mind, if you're fussy about sound clarity and depth, put the unit no more than 2 to 3 feet from you (preferably against a wall) and the sound you hear will be very good. It's crisp, deep and somewhat revealing, "for it's size". Think of it as a "personal hifi" for those that don't like headphones and you'll get the idea.
The sound is improved significantly by using the "Live Audio" mode, BUT it's extremely sensitive to types of music and the processing used in the production mix. It enhances most songs but occasionally, it make little difference or makes it sound worse. What this mode does do 100% of the time is to reduce the volume of the Jambox by 50 to 60%. This IS a big deal and despite what Jambox tech support will tell you, updating to 2.1 firmware will not help.
I've found it excellent for listening to jazz, acoustic instruments and simply produced material. It's not great for dance material but I never expected it to be!
So, in conclusion, it's great, for it's size. It has a cool factor too, but if you don't really have to have something of this size, you may want to consider something slightly less cute that doesn't have quite so many compromises.
Whether it great for the money, however, depends on the depth of your pockets!
