Interesting remake of lesser known 80s cult horror,
This review is from: Mother's Day [DVD] (DVD)
Have just got back from seeing this at the cinema and have to say i was presently supprised by it. This is a remake of the 80s troma horror film of the same name which has never had a release here in the uk so therfore has become a bit of a cult classic. The original was a homage to the likes of last house on the left, i spit on your grave etc.
This remake has been directed by darren lynn bousman director of several of the saw films but dont let that put you off because while there is several gory moments this is not out and out torture porn.
The basic premise of the story is 3 brothers are on the run after commiting a series of bank robberies. One of them has been shot so they head back to the family home to hide out while a tornado is brewing. However when they arrive at their home they discover their "momma" has lost the house and it has been bought on the cheap by a young couple who have moved from the city to try to get over a tragedy. They are hosting a house party when the family barge in taking them all hostage.
Things really get interesting when "mother" shows up. She is played by Rebecca Du Mornay, who is absolutely amazing in the role, in fact her best performance since she played a simmilar disturbed mother in the 90s classic "The hand that rocks the cradle". One minute she is reassuring her terrified hostages that everything is going to be fine and the next ordering her sons to administer some serious acts of violence to anyone who does not "behave".
What follows is a tense night as the hostages and captors become locked in a deadly battle to try and see who will survive the night.
I really reccomend this film to anyone who likes their horror with some depth to it as you really begin to care about some of these characters. And Rebecca Du Mornay still looks hot!
