This review is from: Knowing [DVD] (DVD)
Nic Cage has been a decent actor but his recent efforts have been abysmal to say the least and while this movie isn't a hit it's at least a step in the right direction. He plays a professor who acquires a mysterious sheet of paper listing numbers that are linked to catastrophic events. Coincidence or something else, predictably he tries to convince others and begins to realise he could be onto something apocalyptic.
The first thing I would say is that the first two thirds of the film build up suspense pretty well. And on the plus side Cages performance is pretty good as a man struggling to find logic in the numbers and also coming to terms with the loss of his wife. Also excellent effects two extremely harrowing scenes involving a train and a plane crash are well done. Those scenes pull no punches and are pretty graphic.
The last part of the movie seems to descend into the realms of the x files and I wasn't sure whether it goes well with the rest of the movie. Cage holds it together but I got the feeling whoever wrote or directed this seems to have got carried away with the message. Was their different scriptwriters or just one ? It kept me watching but the ending becomes almost biblical and beyond belief. Aside from this great special effects and one of Cages better Performances.
