Backbone Dictionary For All Homes,
This review is from: The Chambers Dictionary Thumb Index, 11th edition (Hardcover)
I got this for an acquaintance.
Already have the 6th edition (1992).
The only thing wrong with this dictionary is the use of recycled paper - which makes prolonged use a bit irritating because of the extra caustic used in that paper.
But that is a small thing.
It has more references than ever, a thumb-index, classic Chambers red cover, enhanced slang (even urban slang makes an odd entry) and a very fair price.
It will cut it for all but those who need frequent recourse to the deeper etyms and older words in the Oxford English Dictionary.
As an engineer and reader of travel books, I'm often astonished at the amount of technical terms in the Chambers -- sailing terms, woodwork terms, machinery terms, etc.
And, of course, no other dictionary - barring perhaps the OED - can match it for colonial slang words.
Have one of these yourself.
It makes a great long-lasting present too.
