Customer Review

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful
4.0 out of 5 stars i've ended up with a Dell, 13 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Win Ult 7 SP1 64-bit English 1pk DSP OEI DVD (This OEM software is intended for system builders only) (Software)
I was somewhat surprised to find the CD itself was from Dell with the warning that is was for use in re-installing the OS only. Undeterred and in the hope that if things did go wrong I would get a refund I proceeded with the installation on a Brand new Corsair 240Gb SSD. Happily it installed without issue and so far a week later is still running ok. The only snag is it was not win 7 ultimate but just home premium 64 bit. Not being that bothered I have stuck with it as it will serve my needs.

I am annoyed that the Dell logo appears in various locations (EG properties and start up)

I had to activate over the phone which is a tedious task as on line activation was not possible.

however other than this its going OK. Fingers crossed.

Nathan says:
If the pre-installed Dell stuff is bothering you (understandable), you can always download an original factory version of Windows 7 from here (http://goo.gl/0GUXga) and install that instead. The activation code you have already used will work fine as long as you are installing it onto the same computer.

Thanks for the tip Nathan. I'm more or less getting used to it now and its still working fine so unless I have to reinstall I'll stick with it now. Thanks again anyhow.

re the branding,
follow this link and it instructs you how to remove it (without actually editing the registry)

I have the 64 bit version but on a Mac (Bootcamp). The login window icon / picture can be changed via the control panel. On successful activation, I now seem to have "genuine" Microsoft sticker in place. Any programs can be removed via add/remove programs, and I cannot see Dell branding now. Best wishes

One thing I wanted to ask...but if you paid for the Ultimate Edition and got the Home Premium Edition...shouldn't you be asking for a replacement?
Only the Ultimate edition is vastly more expensive than the Home Premium, and has a ton more features too!
