This review is from: Vanquish (PS3) (Video Game)
Platinum Games are currently the darlings of the action scene... well they have received universal acclaim for two of their recent offerings Bayonetta and Vanquish. Unfortunately I cannot see why these titles are so highly regarded, but to each their own.
Vanquish is a twist on the third person shooter with the addition of the ability to whizz across the screen for limited bursts. Admittedly this is fun for the first 10 minutes or so then the novelty wears off and you are left with not much else.
Graphically the game is ok but at no point do you think this looks amazing and the cut scenes in particular look a bit poor compared to similar titles in age and genre. Some of the bigger boss battles look fairly good in terms of detail but they seem to be repeated on a fairly regular basis so they lose their impact after the third or forth time of encountering them.
There is also the issue of one of the major game mechanics namely the cover system being a bit hit and miss as to its effectiveness. Hide behind a solid wall and the collision detection on occasion will register a hit even though it clearly hits your cover you will then proceed to go into another strange game mechanic which is basically just a slo mo which in fact is not ideal when you are trying to avoid one of the tougher challenges.
A distinctly average title which will provide a few hours of distraction while you work your way through it blowing up robots and the like. Unfortunately you will struggle to remember anything groundbreaking or even mildly entertaining once you have completed it.
