Broken Lid x 2,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Russell Hobbs 14439-10 Stylis Kettle, 1.7 L - Metal Effect Silver (Kitchen & Home)
I agree that this is a nice looking kettle but unfortunately it doesn't stand the test of time. I purchased this kettle in Jan 09 and would have happily given a high rating on first impression, speed and quietness. However by Aug 09 the lid struggled to respond to the push button mechanism, eventually stopped opening and then collapsed. The lid split in two leaving the base of the lid on the kettle and allowing the inner workings of plastic and metal spring to fall out. I happily received a replacement, but 4 months on and the same thing has happened again. The kettle still looks like new, but the plastic lid mechanism seems to be made up of lightweight plastic/a small metal spring which does not match the quality of the rest of the kettle.

Could not agree more--great at first but design of lid mechanism terrible--only lasted about a year. Where do you get a spare?

I agree entirely. I too bought one in 2009 but the lid opening mechanism has not stood the test of time, and today sheered off. The metal effect has also started to crack and peel.
However, this has, until about a month ago been the best kettle I have ever used. It boils quickly, the metal effect looks convincingly like chrome and has the added bonus of being cool to the touch on the outside. I am still considering buying another.

I'm afraid this miserable story continues, as the one I bought also only lasted about a year. The failing appears to be a bit of a design error to me as the lid hinge also sheared off.

I agree with everything said. All of a sudden, out-of-the-blue, the lid would not open from the push button. Could only open by lifting with finger tips, into steam - dangerous! Eventually hinge broke completely and lid fell off. Cannot find replacement part Russell Hobbs 14439 1.7 L Stylis Kettle in Metal Effect Classic Design

Totally agree with all the other comments. Perfect kettle still works great and excellent kettle BUT BUT BUT the lid has broken. Tried to glue back together but no luck. Shame it is let down by this poor piece of design.Russell Hobbs 14439 1.7 L Stylis Kettle in Metal Effect Classic Design

Mr. Michael Aston says:
Hi i also have the same problem with the lid, it's about time the manufacturer did some thing isn't it? I have affected a temporary repair by slicing of a little of the plastic which holds the lid catch to the kettle body seems ok now, but for how long one wonders, don't they test things anymore?

Mrs. R Gregerson says:
This is exactly what has happened to ours as well- although it has taken a good 3 years. I am still disappointed as I had hoped the name and reputation of Russell Hobbs might have meant our product lasted longer and was of better quality. Shame as it did well up till this point and is a nice kettle- we have a matching toaster so I suppose we'll look at other Russell Hobbs to replace it with- will read the reviews first though!
