I had a lot of fun with this game.,
This review is from: Mafia II (Xbox 360) (Video Game)This game seems to have a few bad reviews, and I don't know why.
It is quite an oldie now, but it still looks and plays great. It was made by 2K Games and it shows how good they make games e.g. The Darkness franchise.
The story is great, I wouldn't say it was proper mafia AKA The Godfather. I would say it is more street thugs up until near the end where they get to be kinda mafia men. There are a lot of nice touches in the story, the game starts around the 40's, then you go to prison, and when you get out it is six years later and this shows by the look of the cars, clothes, music and other things that change in an era. The only gripe is that the characters don't seem to get older or look different but for their clothes. It also isn't too short, compared to the latest 2K attempt with The Darkness 2 (which is short but very sweet).
The gameplay is great and all fits together nicely. There is a nice cover and shoot system and if you get the crosshair near a head it will auto lock on the head. Car handling is good compared to some I have seen so this shouldn't be a problem.
There is alot of playability, if you like achievements, like me. You can search for wanted posters, Playboy centrefolds (don't let the kids look) and complete various other achievements......... I'm around the 900G now.
You have various shops which you can shop in (or rob), where you can buy new clothes, car upgrades, guns or get something to eat. No strip joints though which I think would of fit in well with this game.
There are a few scenes which you will see that have been taken straight from films, for example, selling smokes from the back of a truck (Goodfellas) and even the jail scenes look a bit like Shawshank.
Overall, I thought this game was great and worth the low price Amazon are asking for it. Give it a go!
