A must have for anyone who lives, or has lived in Shaftesbury.,
This review is from: Tales of Old Shaftesbury (Paperback)
This book was fascinating, it was written by F.C. Long an old 'Shastonian' born in 1899, he is able to give the reader a walk around Shaftesbury, describing how it was in the early 20th century. There are also frequent mentions of the town that date all the way back to the early 19th century (as he states he has 'absorbed' memories from his parents and grandparents) as well as the addition of pictures dating back to as early as 1865.
His opening description is as follows;
'What was it like living in Shafteabury a hundred years ago? Very
different indeed from life today. To picture the changes, today's
young people need to draw on the memories of their grandparents and
great grandparents who actually lived in the town through days long
I was born in 1899 and moreover have absorbed memories from my
own parents from years before that date. As I walk around today, I
recall much that has gone for ever. It occurred to me that many now
living in Shaftesbury would be interested to hear what I can tell of
Shaftesbury's past. So join me, if you will, as I walk around the
town and tell you what I see and what I remember...'
