Living in hope of the divine,

This review is from: The Secret History of Dante: Unearthing the Mysteries of the Inferno (Kindle Edition)
Increasingly, we're being spun a line. The tale goes like this:
Mankind, in an age of ignorance, used formalised superstition as a way to describe the world about them and bring order. Now, at the helm of science & reason, we're slowly able to move away from those realms of fantasy and understand that matter came before mind.
To believe anything different in the modern age is to invite ridicule. The thing is, I don't buy it. So reading books like The Secret History of Dante are an indulgence for me. For anyone who believes there's more to life than the material and suspects that the ceremonial spiritual acts of the past may have held real gold, this book is for you.
It shines a different light on a period of history where secret societies were founded and suggests that the paths to the underworld could well have been trodden as part of very elaborate initiations in very real locations. So, the divine is unwrapped and laid bare, yet the power of the mystery behind it only grows stronger.
The whole process gets rendered by excellent narrative that really allows the atmosphere of Dante's day to form around you. By the end of the book, you can't help but wonder if there is some prisca theologia driving this through the cultures & the ages.
