Backpatting for Bryn,
This review is from: Backpacking with Brian (Paperback)
I received a copy of this book as a gift from my long-suffering wife who for many years has had to endure my own tales of interrailing as a spotty, lanked haired student in the 70s. She thought I'd identify with these 2 hapless characters in the book. I hadn't expected to, but oh boy, did I! By the end of the book I felt I knew these guys personally and had shared some unique adventures with them in some pretty cheesey places. Unfortunately, I had to stifle my laughter constantly(particularly during the recounting of Brian's vain attempt extract the 'trousseau' from the parisian hotel)as my incontinence threatened to get the better of me! Don't get me wrong, this book is no erudite thesis on the the joys of travel by such luminaries as Bruce Chatwin, Ted Simon, et al. but a searingly honest journal of innocent (well almost!) adventures in the first flush of manhood. An impressive debut that left me wishing I'd been there with them. I really hope there's another collection of tales in the pipeline. You are to be congratulaed Mr Parry!
