Derrin Neuendorf's brand of folk rock sounds like a mix of Richard Thompson, Bob Dylan and Springsteen. That's not to say there's no originality here, because the quality and delivery of his voice, the song writing and the production of this album give it a unique and contemporary edge.
Shipwrecked, the haunting Where Two Men Go Tonight and My Hurricane are stand out tracks that I'm sure any of the aforementioned artists would be proud of, but in truth all the songs here are excellent. Neuendorf's acoustic playing and arrangements keep each song lively rather than reducing them to folk mimickry.
Neuendorf has spent years without major label support, touring Europe honing his skills playing to small crowds and selling his self-produced cds from a suitcase. The result is an album that delivers a masterclass in story telling, musical skill and soul.
