If you want a break from the earnest type of literature by renowned and skilled authors such as, say Updike, Roth, Cormac Mccarthy and the like who are all undoubtedly brilliant at times although they can be a little taxing , then I recommend this big hearted large book. I doubt you will regret it.
It reminded me of the original pleasure of reading a cracking page turning story. I consider it akin to recent successful books such as Glenn Taylor's The Ballad Of Trenchmouth Taggert and perhaps The Son by Philipp Meyer in that an entertaining if somewhat unlikely saga unfolds, not that the lack of realism detracts in any way from the best stories in my opinion.
I was down when I finished this book as there was not another novel to dive into by this author though the ending did sound well set up for a follow on.
