A very personal view,
This review is from: Civilisation: A Personal View (Paperback)
An interesting book, a worthwhile read if you want to increase your culture on great masters' paintings and works, and a very acceptable viewpoint on the progress of western civilisation in the mdern era, from the Middle Ages to our time, with some profound insights. But its all very personal, as the author rightly tells us: his view of history appears to be skewed in favour of the Catholic Church, which is correct, in the sense that most of what was achieved in the period covered by Clark's book was done in spite of the Catholic Church much more than because of it. All told, a pleasant addition to your existing books on the subject. B.R.M.
