USA Here I Come!,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Motorcycle Camping Made Easy (Paperback)
I bought this book because I was trying to find as much technical detail as possible about camping in relation to motorcycling which would assist me in planning future trips, both home and abroad, though not specifically America.
Which is where this book falls down unfortunately. The author is clearly very experienced in both motorcycling and camping but has never done either outside of his home country. As a result the book is aimed squarely at the American market and although a lot of the tips and hints, i.e. knots, water purification and cooking, are universal, all of the information concerning hotels, tourist information offices, campsites, national parks and rallies are of no interest unless you are actually intending to go to the states. Even the guide to tent buying contains only American model tents and it appears from this book that they favour those that can be pitched without a fly, undoubtedly because of the climate they enjoy. In contrast I struggled to buy a lightweight tent of this type recently and gave up trying in the end, which highlights a major difference in our camping cultures, or should I say weather!
Also the book was first printed in 2002 and I don't think that it has been updated much since then. Unlike -The Adventure Motorcycling Handbook by Chris Scott:
Adventure Motorcycling Handbook (Trailblazer)
This is a highly detailed guide which touches on every aspect of the subject, including camping, all around the world, and is frequently updated. Although it doesn't recommend specific makes/models of tent or equipment, this information can be easily gained by an afternoon spent on the internet and telephone, which will give you the most up to date information anyhow.
Overall I did enjoy reading Motorcycling Camping Made Easy and did learn quite a bit, but if I excluded the America specific content it would be a very small read and not worth the money I spent.
