This review is from: Kiss Presents Hip Hop Classics (Audio CD)
Despite the first CD being full up of notable filler (eg Ja Rule, Ashanti etc) which could not be justified as full hip hop "classics", the second cd, however, is just that. Probably one of the most notable late 80's early 90's collections is the reward to the listener who puts the 2nd CD in their tray. Tunes such as Public Enemy No.1, Summertime (Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince), Snoop, Dre, Tupac, Ice Cube, Warren G etc all feature, along with other artists such as Salt n Pepa and LL Cool J.
However, thats not to say the first cd is not without merit, two of the CD's best tracks are given on the first cd, these are LL Cool J's Phenomenon (with silky smooth, rapid delivery in full force) and Blackstreets No Diggity (the most seminal song recorded from the New Jack Swing scene in many peoples eyes), these tracks alone warrant the first cd's existence.
So, its a great compilation, it wouldn't get 5mics in the source, simply because of the contemporary 'pop-rap' (ie nelly etc) on the first cd, but the second cd as i've already mentioned is pure classics. It offers something for everyone and serves as a good introduction to many sub-genres of hip hop. Highly recommended.
