4.0 out of 5 stars Fine release by Galician supergroup., 31 Jan. 2011
This review is from: A quinta das lagrimas (Audio CD)
A Quinta das Lagrinas is a much stronger album than it's predecessor as Milladoiro continue with it's more vocal approach. 6 of the nine tracks are songs but overall the sound of the album is much nearer to the band's take on traditional Galician music than evident on "Unha Estrela"

The opening track sounds not unlike a Luar na Lubre ballad and is followed by a version of 2 tunes from the cantigas of Santa Maria (from the 13th century). I have always thought that these delightful ancient songs would be an ideal source for Milladoiro with their background in Early Music and their mix of instruments but this selection doesn't really excite and continues the rather low key start to the CD.

Things do pick up as the instrumental title track is lovely and a couple of the later songs with female vocals are beautiful. They also feature exquisite arrangements, with pipes making lovely entrances and also making use of some fine ensemble singing.

The last track is a very typical Milladoiro instrumental with a lovely theme which has an unexpected tempo change and they interweave their vast array of instruments to add colour and dynamics. This CD would probably have earned 5 stars apart from the subdued opening numbers and if you prefer sung Spanish or Galician to instrumental music then this would be a very good place to start your exploration of this group.
