Um....?? what happened?,
This review is from: Tokyo Underground [DVD] (DVD)I watched this series at a time when I had very little other anime options. It started off quite well, but then slowed down a bit before building up momentum to the final episodes. I am a casual anime watcher, in that if a series doesnt catch my attention quickly, I often dont finish watching it. However this series does grab you after the first few eps, and I found myself actually enjoying the characters.
The premise revolves around a civilisation of people who live beneath Tokyo and can control the elements. One of them, Ruri, escapes to the surface and meets a normal human, Rumina. An unusual plot element - Rumina is killed by Ruri's bodyguard straight away, but he is resurrected by Ruri and given the power of wind So now he is embroiled in the saga of these elemental users, and he vows to protect Ruri. The plotline was not frantic, indeed there are some slower moments, but the character interaction and romance between Ruri and Rumina make it enjoyable to watch even the slower episodes, and the fight scenes are rather good.
So, interesting stoyline, good characters, it made me watch till the very end... so why 3 stars? :|
Well... the ending. No matter how good an anime is, the ending has to be worth my time spent watching it.
This just didn't cut it. In the last 4 eps, a massive story arc was introduced...right up to the last episode, i kept thinking how on earth would they wrap this up?? Was there a second season? (There isn't by the way). The story built up tension right to the final minute (which would have been great if I wasn't so uncertain that there was no way to wrap up all the loose ends...
And bam, it was finished. It felt like the first season of Naruto, ending just as it was starting to get really interesting. And unlike a series like Naruto, there is no more.
So a worthwhile anime, but one that kinda left me feeling cheated at the end
