This is a complex novel. It shocks and it holds you. I gasped at one point. Ali is a painfully accurate teenage girl edging towards women-hood. I think she is the most tightly observed teenager I have ever met in a novel. The mix of disturbed child and increasing ownership of her own voice: it hurts. The religious-bound reality of Ireland in the 1980s is all there. Wonderful writing. It stays with you.
