Girl With A Pearl Earring is one of Alexandre Desplat's best film scores.,

He may have earned himself an Oscar nomination at the beginning of last year for his score for 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' but I still think that his score for 'Girl With A Pearl Earring' is among some of his best and finest work. Having seen the film when it first hit the cinemas back in early 2004, this score complimented the film so superbly that I just had to get it. It works well even on its own as well as with the film. The composer's ability with the music to transport the listener back to 1660's Holland, where the film and the book it's based on is set, is exceptional.
Whenever I listen to this wonderful soundtrack, I envisage the locations and sights and what it might have been like in the time of Johannes Vermeer when he painted his masterpiece painting. The music is light and airy during the brighter sections and sometimes sombre and dark when the mood darkens. One of Alexandre Desplat's best scores by an earth shattering mile in my book. Well worth a listen.
It doesn't matter much if you've seen the film or not, the music alone is testament to the composer's genius and talent. Comes highly recommended.
