Great modern rock album,
This review is from: Songs For The End Of The World (Audio CD)
Don't assume the high ratings on Amazon are from nostalgia addicts ready to gush about any new material from their favourite 80s stars. This is - put simply - a great modern rock album. Music press reviews of the album feature a general trend of surprise and delight at the strength of the offering. The songs are so well written, structured and performed, all beautifully matched by flawless 'wall of sound' production.
Dispel any preconceptions you might have: there is *nothing* on this album that leans on Springfield's better known hits. This is very much 21st century rock with a particularly satisfying hard edge. The opening track "Wide Awake" sets the agenda, matching any mainstream Foo Fighters hits from the last 10-15 years. Springfield's trademark soul-searching lyrical content is on show, made all the more potent by the ferocity of delivery in several cases.
Listeners disappointed with this album will be those seeking a series of MOR radio hits. You'll find one or two of course, but the main body of songs are intense, efficient bursts of energy.
Negatives? Okay - if you listen really, *really* hard, way down in the mix you *might* hear a questionable choice of synth sound here and there. The bonus tracks (demos perhaps) water down the high level of quality, but you will have to work extremely hard to find a criticism that stands up to any scrutiny.
If you are in two minds about getting this, err on the side of faith. It is fantastic.
