An old idea updated and polished,
This review is from: The Chess Combat Simulator: Test and Improve Your Chess with 50 Instructive Grandmaster Games (New in Chess) (Paperback)This is a typical 'test your chess' type book that has been around for years. Its the usual thing; cover the page over while you decide on a move and then the author awards you points based on your selection. Okay so what makes this book any different from the others? Well a few things:
1. Rather than annotating each move as you are playing through the game, all the detailed analysis occurs after you have done the test. Following the opening moves the test page is well set out in rows for each move, these provide info on the players actual move how many points are scored for it as well as scoring for reasonable alternatives, this is followed obviously by the opponents reply. Only after the test is completed are the moves explained with variations as appropriate.
2. This book is slightly larger than a typical 'batsford' style book which means the pages hold open move easily....very important when covering over the moves each time!!
In conclusion, I really do like this book, its nothing that hasn't been done before but at the same time it is certainly more polished and makes the undertaking of the tests far more straight forward..Recommended
