First thing I should say is that I am not a fan of first person shooters and haven't played any of the other games in this series but...
I really enjoyed this game and have played it through from beginning to end and still pick it up to play on the harder difficulty settings and to try and win all the levels withg medals (awarded for top performance). From the minute I picked it up I was hooked, and terrified, the controller shakes and the viewpoint rolls as shells explode all around you as you land on Omaha beach, it really feels chaotic as you sprint along the beach firing at bunkers. It really is like controlling the opening scens of saving private ryan. It is not until you have got off the beach and towards the bunkers that you come face to face with German troops and it is terrifying - the tension is unbelievable and the game keeps it up throughout the levels.
The learning curve is just right and the levels are imaginative with fighting taking place in many different environments (Bridges, inside Bunkers, a Submarine and fighting through Downtown Arnhem has to be seen to be believed!) with a variety of weapons, although the sniper's rifle is a favourite.
I would really recommend it, but there are a few points that stopped it being a five star review. First is that the game is very linear, there is little opportunity to break off and explore the level, it guides you through a fixed path. The second is that it is not interactive enough, sure you can break windows, but a grenade should overturn a table or maybe you could shoot through a rope holding some boxes up? Thirdly, those Germans are a bit stupid - they need some more intelligence, rather than just standing there when their partner has just been picked off!
