This review is from: Teach Yourself Basic Spanish (TYL) (Paperback)
Having already established a fairly basic level of Spanish I thought I would try and build up my knowledge of the language and chose this book having had a good experience with the French equivalent. Having used TYL Basic French I actually thought the books would have a similar approach and structure, but found this book to be inferior to the French version.
Although there is a good amount of information and vocab it is never put across in a particularly clear way and some of the explanations seem a bit confused. I frequently find myself re-reading passages to make light of a particular grammar rule and some of the lessons which are there to reinforce what you have learnt are sadly lacking and don't seem to be particularly effective. Maybe it's just me, but the way the exercises are structured just don't seem to set in my mind! I have tried other language courses which I feel have done the trick but sadly this one isn't one of them.
As a reference tool and a refresher to those already familiar with the language I think this could be a great help. If you're learning from scratch then TYL's Beginners Spanish I found very good as well as BBC's Suenos courses.
Sorry but this just didn't do it for me!
