Roleplaying in the age of King Arthur,
This review is from: The Great Pendragon Campaign (Pendragon) (Hardcover)
The Great Pendragon Campaign is a big book. No, the word 'big' doesn't do it justice - it's an enormous book. It's not so much a brick as a breeze block! If you ever intend to actually run a campaign for the Pendragon role-playing game I would say that this book is a must buy (unless you're very creative, know a lot about Arthurian literature and have a lot of spare time).
For the uninitiated, every Pendragon campaign takes place over a period of about 80 years, with certain events happening at set times. In theory you could play a Pendragon campaign run by two different people and the same over-arcing events would be happening in the two games at the same time.
This book is divided into a number of chapters that each cover a period of about 10 years. Each year has its own entry with a description of the main events that take place that year, a description of events that take place at the king's court and suggestions for adventures to throw at the PCs. There are maps throughout and plenty of background information is provided.
The sheer scope of this campaign is awesome. If run properly I find it hard to imagine a role-playing experience that could match it. I should probably mention that despite the mass of information contained within this book, if you intend to run this campaign you're still going to have to put in a fair bit of work yourself (but I suppose this is understandable given the sheer size of the game).
All in all, this is a great book - it's well put together, fully illustrated and is an interesting read whether or not you ever get around to running the thing.
