I love The Hobbit and since I was a small boy, I've have always preferred it to it's bigger brother The Lord of the Rings. Over the years I've heard many great things about this 1968 BBC adaptation of the story and I was looking forward to hearing how it had been brought to life. Sadly, it just doesn't live up to the Nicol Williamson version my Dad borrowed from the record section of library for us to listen to when I was a boy. The soundscape in this BBC version is a horrible combination of Munchkin voices and a melange of primitive medieval instruments that sound as evolved as the kazoo. Whilst the dramatisation is fairly faithful to the original text, it makes for a painful listening experience and I struggled to persevere to the end of the five CDs included in this set.
If it were readily available nowadays, I'd recommend the Nicol Williamson version over this, but I suppose it's down to personal taste.
