Another Quiet Night,
This review is from: What's It All About (Audio CD)
OK, so you like "One Quiet Night", which is not the best Metheny album by miles. Here is the same evocative, sensitive stuff, mulled over and overdubbed, despite a previous reviewer's insistence to the contrary. It's great and he does it great but for those who thirst for the exuberant, desolate and sublime offerings of The Pat Metheny Group this is Pat pedalling/peddling more of the same late night sound.
There are no cataclysmic harmonic moments, no Steve, no Lyle, no band. So what ? Well, it's a tough nod. Metheny is one of the most important musicians of our time, without a doubt; but this just ain't the stuff he should be doing in his prime. If I were him - and I'm not - I'd be laying on my wreathes too... hell, he's already laid down a body of work that speaks for itself and which few other artists/performers/composers/musicians get near, so ... Yeah, let's give the guy a break and let him do what he likes because that's what we want from people like Pat:" do your thing, Buddy; we're right with you still"
It's not fair to expect great voices such as Pat to deliver sublime statements every, every time. Every musician works within the creative cycle and commercial conditions they're living in, and that's what makes the great truly great, and Metheny's done that better than most, and remained essentially "true" and "visionary".
So I think that Metheny really is one of the greats ; little is ever said of him outside his home audience of converts... and that is the way it always is and always has been and always will be, but in time his music will be heard - probably when he's gone - if music still matters then.
And I think that's where Pat lives right now: in an uncertain world, just like the rest of us : No redemption, no favours, no ultimate certainty. So he'd rather stay at home and play those songs that he loves, and we wait and wait for another Offramp, another Secret Story, another First Circle... another Way Up...
But here is Pat kinda entrenching , biding time before the next musical statement, the homesy Pat doing the same thing all his brothers do, biding time and building towards another moment we can all make our lives meaningful by.
Will he do it or is The Way Down next ? That will never be answered by anyone but Pat himself; no critic , no other man, woman or child. It's his call, his decision, his destiny. Let's wait and see, and hope and pray. Apologies, Pat. You make your story the way you want it to be. That really is up to you. X

You should be his coach! "Listen to me Pat", you could say, "The people have spoken, and I know what they want!", "Give Lyle a call and get yourself in that studio and you're not allowed out until you've got something to really shout about". "We want another Secret Story!!!
