A giant leap backward for Revell,
= Durability: = Fun: = Educational:
This review is from: Revell - Apollo Saturn V 1:96 Scale (Toy)
I was disappointed in this as soon as I opened the box. My first thought was that many of the parts must be missing - there didn't seem to be anything like enough cylindrical sections to build the whole thing. However, it turned out that some of the stages are built of flexible plastic sheet, which you have to curl round and clip together. (Note the item in the product desciption that says: "Printed tubular components made of thin polystyrene strips". I was baffled when I read it - this is what it's referring to) Not a very durable way of doing things, it seems to me. As if that's not bad enough, those parts already have the words "United States" printed on them, so if you like to paint your models and don't want those parts to remain looking like a piece of plastic, tough luck - you're stuck with it.
I've built several Revell kits and this is the first time I've been disappointed. The rest of the kit looks ok - even if there's an awful lot of empty space in the huge box - but these parts are more like assembling a toy than something you a serious modeller would expect to find, especially in a product labelled "skill level 5". A cynical, corner-cutting piece of manufacturing. I'll be returning this.
