2.0 out of 5 stars Nice camera, deeply disappointing experience., 3 Oct. 2012

This review is from: Fujifilm FinePix S2980 Digital Camera (14MP, 18x Optical Zoom) 3 inch LCD Screen (Electronics)
I bought this to take on a six-week trip to India. Had a great couple of weeks learning to use it and taking some great shots, really getting to like the camera. Then - a week into the holiday - it stopped working. A message appeared every time I switched it on, to switch off and on again; it was essentially dead.
So, holiday of a lifetime with no camera. But at least there were a couple of hundred shots and videos on the card from the first week.
Getting home I find that when I try to upload the photos, the card is not formatted. It seems that the camera malfunction may have also wiped the card.
I contact Fuji's repair service, the man on the phone recommends I include the memory card and a letter for his attention. It's a smoothly organised service (though I have to pay £7.50 to send the camera in) and the camera comes back within a week, working. But the card is now re-formatted and completely blank. So my letter explaining the problem with the card appears to have been completely ignored.
So, apart from a dozen pictures I uploaded to Facebook when travelling, I have nothing.
I have a camera that I don't trust not to fail again, and a memory card that might also be faulty.

Did you format the card inside the Fuji camera with the menu system before using it? This is a very common issue, as memory cards as bought, are not formatted for your specific camera.

I had one for about a year. The on/off switch froze. On-line suggestions included 'banging it on the carpet'. That worked. It switched on ok for a while but the battery housing got damaged. Repeatedly fails to switch on. Bit rubbish really.

That is the problem with reformatting... That action wipes out the files, and leaves the owner with a blank card. The service person should have advised, or reminded you of that, before doing anything. Sometimes, it may be worth your time to try and open the files with the card inserted in a card reader with USB connection to your computer. One of the windows program may work, or try "finepix" that actually comes with the camera, I hope?
