This review is from: Percy The Park Keeper - The Classic Collection [DVD] (DVD)
Well after reading all the glowing reviews I decided to buy this DVD for my 3 1/2 yr old little girl as she loves all the Percy's Park books and I enjoy reading them to her as well. I was expecting something 'enchanting' and 'magical' and after watching this was left feeling a little deflated. It is ok, as far as kids TV goes, but definitely not outstandingly brilliant. I think the voice of Jim Broadbent was a good choice for Percy, but as for some of the animal characters their voices leave a bit to be desired. The voice given to the fox is particularly annoying as he is very 'dopey' sounding, certainly not in keeping with the expected character for a fox which is quick-witted and cunning. The badger's voice is also very mumbly and expressionless and in the episode where he has a bath we had to turn up the volume to try and make out what he was saying. The voice of one of the rabbits happens to be the same as that of the character Dizzy the cement mixer from Bob the Builder, which really confused my little girl as she kept asking if the rabbit was actually Dizzy in reality. The stories themselves are harmless enough if a bit banal and twee, and the animation's alright but again not brilliant as in the countryside scenes it looks very 2D and the panning across from one side to the other is very amateurish and looks a bit unnatural. This all may sound a bit like nit-picking but when the expectations were set so high we couldn't help feeling dissapointed. So, overall, it's ok, but not amazing.
