Disturbing, frustrating and rewarding in equal measure: that's how I would sum up Iain Banks' final novel, "The Quarry".
This is a myopic - almost fly-on-the-wall - study of a reunion of middle-aged university friends, a last-hurrah for their erstwhile acerbic "leader" who is dying of cancer. The novel's impact is enhanced by the fact that Banks was himself dying of cancer as he wrote it: I'm sure there are many autobiographical elements within the character who is dying.
It's not always easy to read but worth persevering with as it is ultimately deeply satisfying.
