The Amazing Evolution of Boe Continues,
This review is from: Storyteller (Audio CD)
When you've spent your whole career refusing to have others dictate in which box you must reside, one could understand if a certain world-weariness sets in. Alfie Boe, to his everlasting credit, never allows that to happen. Instead, he keeps his eye on the destiny he KNOWS to be right, and pursues it with a passion and gusto that is something to behold. The result: beautiful albums such as "Storyteller, Alfie's latest step on his personal journey of discovery. The tenor delves into classic Elvis and Simon and Garfunkel brilliantly. Even more intriguing, he explores some down-home, uptown, Sunday-go-to-meeting rhythm-and-blues, and that part of the journey is beyond brilliant. "Rank Strangers"... "Angels from Montgomery." Oh, my!!! ... Then there is "Wayfaring Stranger." This incredibly sultry, sexy and soulful adaptation doesn't just take you to the roots of R&B; it drills down into its marrow. Believe me, if you don't feel New Orleans and Memphis stirring in your soul, check your pulse because there might be a problem!

That is it, is it not, with STORYTELLER: Alfie is using his magnificent voice to delve into the musical stories that reach into the deepest places of our very being, our soul. "Drills down into it's marrow", so to speak. Feet on the ground, solid and sure.
Yes, Alfie singing Bringing Him Home at the 02 (DVD) demonstrated the sheer beauty of his voice when singing classically. The beauty of his voice that night brought thousands to their feet in awe of the `spiritual' heights a human voice could reach. Spine chilling stuff. A rare and treasured moment for those lucky enough to have experienced it.
And now? STORYTELLER is offering not just Alfie's magnificent voice: it is offering something in addition to beauty - it is offering the goose-bumps of excitement and celebration as it digs deep into who we are. I have often thought about how to describe Alfie's voice, or more specifically, how that voice resonates with me. I think I have now got it - above all the accolades that that voice has generated for Alfie - for me, the appeal of that voice rests upon its core not it's heights - however great the beauty of those heights - it's the down to earth core of that voice that resonates more completely. A core that is finally revealed in STORYTELLER.

I so agree, a departure for Alfie, but he adds a new dimention singing the music he loves, I adore his version of 'Wayfaring stranger'.
