5.0 out of 5 stars Putting the 'Dick' in 'Dixie'!, 15 Sept. 2005
This review is from: Risin' Outlaw (Audio CD)
I discovered Hank III through his sterling work as bassist with Superjoint Ritual. Having long been a closet country fan, I decided to check out his albums when I read that he did country/'Hellbilly' shows in the US with his band, Assjack. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised and hooked from day one. More upbeat than his later album 'Lovesick, Broke and Driftin', 'Rasin' Outlaw' has it all - baleful country ballads, foot tapping Honky Tonk and fantastic steel guitars and fiddles. Hank's voice may be a bit nasal for some but it suits the mood perfectly and can express all kinds of emotion, from yearning and lonesome to downright dirty. The songs all seem to imprint themselves in the memory from the first listen, especially 'Honky Tonk Girls', 'Devil's Daughter' and the fantastic, epic 'Cocaine Blues', which takes us on the journey of a good 'ol boy who shoots his woman down after one too many nips of whiskey and a bit of the old Bolivian marching powder. In short, a great album for country fans and even those who are new to the genre. Hank's family are well renowned in country circles and apparently he sounds a lot like his father, Hank Williams Jr and his grandaddy before him, Hank Williams Sr. I look forward to seeing Hank live if he ever comes to the UK either with Assjack (or 'The Damn Band') or on bass duties with Superjoint. This man has many strings to his bow and he ain't afraid to strum 'em.
