Essential for fans of Ryland P.,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Down At The Field (Audio CD)
I've never heard of this CD before. It consists of recordings from two radio shows Ry Cooder did in 1974 although only released in 2011. I'm not sure if the recordings are newly discovered but they are certainly new to me. The first thing to emphasise is that although the cover photos show Ry with Strat in hand these recordings are solo and acoustic. So don't be misled. But what a treat! If you are a Ry fan then I think this is an essential purchase. The guy is singing and playing up a storm. To me the 70's are his golden period. I've got all the film music and the Buena Vista but the string of Warner Bros. LPs (as they were then!) from that period are what I first got into and remain my favourites. His readings of that material on these recordings are superb. Different to the original recorded versions and I'm pretty sure that he occaisionally forgets the words. But it all adds to the live flavour. Also his amusing between song stories are great and really add to the intimate feeling. But this takes me on to why I have only given this 4 stars. The volume on his sung vocals is much louder than on his speaking voice and so when listening in the car I have to turn up the volume at every interval to hear what he is saying otherwise his introductions are inaudible. I think they could have fixed this but don't let it put you off the music is what counts and that is all OK.
