This review is from: Rome: Total War (PC) (Video Game)
Being a fan of the two previous Total War games I was looking forward to this game with baited breath and despite my computer not being able to run the game at peak efficiency I still thoroughly enjoy it. In the campaign system you can begin being able to play as any one of the three roman fractions, the houses of Brutii, Julii & Scipii, and as you play through you unlock the other playable countries such as Gaul. The Campaign map is more detailed than those of previous games, with roads and bridges that speed up and slow down your armies. As well as this rather than invading a province and fighting against its defenders as in previous games, you can move through provinces at will (although there may be diplomatic consequences) and only fight against another fraction if you or they physically attack an opposing army or city. This allows you to use some more advanced strategies, such as using an army to lure away a cities defenders and then attack the city with a second force. The battles themselves are similar to those of previous games with the expected increase in the graphics and gameplay, with more options for individual units such as the tortoise formation for legionaries. Overall the game itself is great, and is also very informative with historical descriptions of events and units. I would have to say it is one of the best Real Time Strategy games that I have played.
