Very slow but compelling performances,

This review is from: Mahler: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Kindertotenlieder, 5 Rückert-Lieder (Audio CD)
These very slow performances of Mahler's orchestral songs may not be everyone's first choice, but Bernstein and Hampson present them fully integrated in Mahler's beautiful orchestration, unlike so many other recordings in which the orchestra becomes mere background music. Hampson's singing is not as emotionally intense as Fischer-Dieskau, yet deeply moving and mature. Vienna PO's playing is gorgeous and at times magical.
