This review is from: Getting Off: A Novel of Sex & Violence (Hard Case Crime) (Paperback)
Of course this is beautifully written: it's Lawrence Block. Anyone familiar with his wonderful Matt Scudder or "Hitman" Keller tales will approach this with justified relish; if, possibly, a little caution, too. Don't hesitate, though: the characters and dialogue, the skilful plotting - those characteristics are fluently natural to this fine author and grace everything he writes, more than including this.
Here, extra sauce is added with the deliberate, artful, even perverse indulgence in the freedoms of the pulp genre; but elevated both by Block's innate artistry and his splendid study of the dark, sexy heroine, a self-aware serial killer with a twisted moral drive and a frank taste for what she does.
Some of the scenes in this achieve a level of erotic entertainment for which many of today's more self-indulgent exponents would, well, kill. And I think that many of the liberated ladies I know would read this with a double frisson of acknowledgement of their inner drives and real amazement at the insightful way a male author can get into their skin and deliver genuine depth embedded in the undoubted thrills.
It's funny, sexy, often truly shocking but frequently hilarious and always entertaining, quite superb in the way Block, as ever, brings wit and serious discussion into his compelling narrative. Certain episodes in the story - and they build as it goes - constitute some of the most outrageous, guiltily pleasurable, near-dark sequences of sex and violence I've read for some time. I probably couldn't get away with describing some of the things our heroine gets up (or down, or off) to, without getting my review, er, pulled. Nor should I: Block does what he does so much better!
Try it, please; my educated guess is that, if you have a taste for challenging ideas and fascinating people (maybe you're a Breaking Bad fan, too?), along with some admittedly, even indulgently, "cheap" thrills, you will be hooked as I was.
