3.0 out of 5 stars The other side of the battle., 7 Feb 2011
This review is from: Prospero Burns (The Horus Heresy) (Paperback)
"Woe betide he who ignores my warning or breaks faith with me. He shall be my enemy, and I will visit such destruction upon him and all his followers that, until the end of all things, he shall rue the day he turned from my light."
(Exert from the book A Thousand Sons)

Harsh words from The Emperor at the conclusion of the council of Nikaea.

Before reading Prospero burns and A Thousand Sons, i had greatly anticipated the release of the next installment of the HH series. After reading all the books in the series i was disappointed to hear the release date for the title Prospero Burns had been postponed. So I read them all again whilst waiting for the next release which came in the form of the amazingly brilliant Thousand Sons novel. By far one of the best in the storyline, if not the best at least in the top four. Brilliantly written with mountains of suspense, action and tragedy. With an insightful gaze into the true heart of a Primarch.

Suffice to say i was expecting no less from the long awaited Prospero Burns, expecting the same vivid characters and deeply gripping tale. Unfortunately this was not the case.

The story is told through the eyes of a human who arrives on Fenris to study the planet and its inhabitants, from the opening chapter is full of themes that get your mind to conjure images of the vast frozen landscape, the book is very well written in respect to description of the surroundings so far as to make you feel like you are actually there.

Right from the beginning, the story is jam packed full of epic battle scenes on a scale that is hard to comprehend, this is a positive thing however. It is well enough written that you are not overwhelmed by the scope of the writers vision. This leads to one of the best and most destructive opening attacks of an Astartes war, (SO EPIC) and the ensuing battle for the planet if simply awesome!

The characters of the Space Wolves are portrayed well enough, if a little one dimensional for myself, although you do get a good insight into the legion as a whole. One thing that i was disappointed about was the lack of inclusion of the Wolf King Lemann Russ, although he does feature in the novel i feel that a little more light could have been shone on him. I know that traditionally he is mysterious and aloof but in my view the HH series is all about the Primarchs and they should feature heavily in the storyline.

In all the book is actually fantastic and i would urge anyone who is a fan of the series to read it, but not without reading A Thousand Sons first. Prospero Burns delves into the Space wolves legion and gives a good account of the struggle against a brother legion, not only in battle but also the sruggle with the task The Emperor has given them, it indeed is an epic tale of the other side of the battle for Prospero.
