This review is from: Snakes & Arrows (European Tour Edition) (Audio CD)
The CD/DVD Tour Edition of this set costs more than twice the price of the regular CD, but I'm very pleased I opted for it. Why? Simply because the mix on the CD is brutal and ugly. A wall of sound that assails the ears. Geddy's voice is often spotlit in a bizarre way that emphasises a few vocal quirks in his performance. As Neil Young's DVD albums remind us, that format has far higher resolution and dynamic range than CD does, and "Snakes and Arrows" only sounds as it should do on the DVD. I don't have surround sound for the present, but even the stereo is far better than on CD. The bottom end is opened up (without losing power), and Geddy is much more integrated into the band as a whole.
I can only imagine that the CD mix was created almost as an afterthought to the surround and high resolution stereo mixes, and am surprised that Rush OK'd it. For that reason alone I would recommend that people coming to this album spend the extra cash for the two disc version. Get it whilst it's available.
