Good, not great,
This review is from: WWE Royal Rumble 2005 [DVD] (DVD)
This show features several good matches and only one poor match. It might not be one of the best Rumble events (personally I think the best Rumble events are 2000, 2001, 2007 and 2008) but it is considerably above average.
Edge vs Shawn Michaels 7/10
A good, solid opener with the right result. Personally I was a little disappointed with this match, but then again they were going to have another match a few weeks later on Raw and so they probably didn't want to set expectations too high.
Casket Match: The Undertaker vs Heidenreich 3/10
Not quite as bad as expected, but still some distance from good. Heidenreich looked terrible as usual and, as good as he is, Undertaker couldn't carry the match. At least this match finally ended the tedious Undertaker/Heidenreich feud.
WWE title: John 'Bradshaw' Layfield vs Kurt Angle vs Big Show 5/10
Unsurprisingly Angle carries the workload and the match is better than most of JBL's title defences (although that's not saying much). The match is overbooked, with loads of interference from Luther Reigns, Mark Jindrak, The Bashams and Orlando Jordan and it is mostly entertaining.
World title: Triple H vs Randy Orton 6/10
A decent match, but one which showed yet again that Randy Orton's babyface run was misfiring spectacularly. Many fans cheered the despicable heel Triple H over Orton.
2005 Royal Rumble match 8/10
A mostly exciting rumble match. Memorable moments include the Raw vs SmackDown! interlude, Kurt Angle and Shawn Michaels' exchanges and Paul London's unbelievable flip to the floor. Sadly the match descended into farce at the end when John Cena and Batista screwed up the finish beyond belief and, when he came to the ring to try and salvage the shambles, Vince McMahon suffered a torn quadriceps tendon and had to sit in the ring because he couldn't stand.
So for the most part Royal Rumble 2005 was an enjoyable show, which did a good job of setting up Wrestlemania 21; the seeds were sewn for Angle and Michaels' classic match at 'Mania and Batista's rumble victory continued the exemplary build up to his babyface turn and match against Triple H. I'd say this show is worth a watch.
