For young children only... I don't like the "new" theme either...,
This review is from: Doctor Who: Voyage of the Damned, 2007 Christmas Special [DVD] (DVD)
My eight year old son loves this adventure, but I see too much "visuals over storyline" here.
There's much to feed the eyes here and, as is normal for a Christmas special, little to feed the mind (well, we're too full of food and Christmas Spirit to care, aren't we). The incidental music often drowns out the dialogue and there's far too much of it too. The least said about the loud, squashed up re-mix of the "re-mixed" new series theme tune the better, but it suits the nature of the current series I suppose.
Anyone who loved the original series, especially if they're old enough to remember the sixties stories when first broadcast will know exactly what I mean. "New Doctor Who" has the most amazing visuals compared to what I watched in black and white as a kid, but the best stories of this era are often the ones where the special effects have been toned right down. I'm having difficulty with the dumbed down feel of many recent stories too, including this one.
This DVD will be for kids who loved watching it on Christmas Day. I'm sure the rest of us, especially ancient fans like me, will have other things to spend their DVD allowance on, like the Silurian/Sea Devil box set for example...
