Not the band I used to love.,
This review is from: Black Clouds & Silver Linings (Audio CD)
I am a huge Dream Theater fan, I have everything they have ever done, and I have to admit to being VERY disappointed with this release.
I got into the band coz they were different - Yes, they had huge riffs, but they also had great musicianship, and took you where very few bands went. You could have out and out metal one minute, and then Floyd like passages the next, with loads of bits inbetween. This, as Mike Portnoy hinted at, sounds like a band running out of ideas. Its just an above average Heavy metal album, and that is only down to the people playing on it! As one reviewer states, it feels like a rehash of Train of Thought, which WAS a good album, but this?
Maybe Mr Portnoy going will freshen things up a bit, although as a huge fan of the guy, I will be sorry not to see him on the drum stool on the next tour!
Very little diversity, and it doesn't get played much at all- I will go and listen to Awake instead!
